How to Compress a PDF to 50 KB or 100 KB for Online Forms

Almost every Indian government form — SSC, UPSC, Railway RRB, bank exams, passport, scholarship portals — sets a strict file-size limit for the documents you upload. The most common limits are 50 KB, 100 KB, 200 KB and 500 KB. If your PDF is even slightly over the limit, the portal rejects it. Why is my PDF so large?

A PDF made from a phone scan or a photo is heavy because it stores a full-resolution image of every page. A single 12-megapixel photo can be 3–8 MB on its own. When you place two or three such photos into a PDF, the file easily crosses 10 MB — far above a 100 KB form limit. Text-only PDFs (like a downloaded admit card) are usually small already; it is the scanned and photographed documents that need compressing.

The two ways to compress a PDF

There are two honest approaches, and knowing the difference saves you a lot of frustration:

• Structural optimisation (keeps text): the tool cleans up the internal structure of the PDF without touching quality. This is great for PDFs that were exported from Word or a website, but it does very little for scanned documents because the bulk is the image.

Step-by-step: compress a PDF to under 100 KB
